COMMON REASONS TO SEEK THERAPY

MOOD DISORDERS

Depression, dysthymia and bipolar disorder all cause negative changes to an individual’s moods and interfere with their daily functioning. Symptoms may include diminished/increased appetite, tiredness, difficulty concentrating, feelings of hopelessness or emptiness and thoughts of self-harm and death.

ANXIETY DISORDERS

Anxiety Disorders occur as a result to the disruption of the brain’s warning system, making relatively safe and normal situations seem very threatening and dangerous. General anxiety, panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) all cause changes to the body’s fight-flight response system.

TRAUMA

After an event in which a person feels seriously threatened it is normal for them to feel frightened, sad, anxious, and disconnected. However, if the upset doesn’t fade and the person becomes stuck with a constant sense of danger and painful memories, they may be experiencing symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

EATING DISORDERS

Eating Disorders describe illnesses characterised by extreme expressions of food, weight and body image issues and are experienced by both women and men. They affect approximately 9% of Australians. These disorders can be incredibly dangerous because they are often associated with significant physical health problems.

POOR SELF-ESTEEM

Self-esteem is the degree to which we feel confident, consider ourselves valuable, and respect ourselves. Low self-esteem is reflected by negative thoughts such as “I am ugly, stupid, boring” etc. Low self-esteem can hold you back from doing the things you want to do, achieve your full potential or even saying things you want to say.

STRESS

It is unavoidable to experience some type of stress throughout our lifetime, whether it be related to a specific incident, work, family, life transition or other life situation.Learning to manage stress caused by different life circumstances is important so that it does not contribute to problems, interpersonally, physically, emotionally or spiritually.
