Parenting a child with anxiety can feel heavy. Mindfulness offers small, doable moments of calm you can build into daily life. These quick steps support stress management and emotional regulation—just a few minutes at a time.
Mindfulness helps children notice thoughts and body signals, then choose a helpful response. It can also complement child therapy for anxiety and depression.

THE 5 SIMPLE STEPS
- Create pockets of calm
- Set 5–10-minute calm windows (after school or before bed).
- Turn off devices and use softer voices.
- Create a simple calm corner with a cushion and a few sensory items.
- Consistency helps the nervous system settle.
- Model mindfulness
- Slow your pace and speech.
- Take one breath before responding to tricky moments.
- Leave a little earlier to reduce rushing.

- Breathe together
- Balloon breath (ages 3–8): belly inflates on inhale, deflates on exhale.
- Three sighs: breathe out with a soft sigh, three times.
- Box breathing (4-4-4-4).
- Practice when calm so it’s ready for child anxiety spikes.
- Engage the senses
- 5-4-3-2-1: name what you see, touch, hear, smell, taste.
- Sensory bag: smooth stone, soft fabric, bumpy ball.
- Mindful eating: notice colour, crunch, smell.
- Often helpful for child ADHD and child autism.

- Keep it fun and short
- 2–3 minutes is enough.
- Try mindful movement, short stories, or kid-friendly apps (e.g., Smiling Mind).
- Link it to routines: three breaths before leaving the car.
WHEN TO SEEK EXTRA SUPPORT
- School avoidance or frequent tummy aches/headaches.
- Distress most days, or family routines affected.
- Worries linked with past difficult events.
Support from a qualified practitioner can help you adapt these tools, especially where trauma or neurodiversity is present.
