What is a clinical psychologist?
A clinical psychologist is a registered psychologist who has completed additional postgraduate training (usually a master’s or doctorate in clinical psychology) and a registrar program, and holds an AHPRA-endorsed area of practice in clinical psychology. This training focuses on the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of more complex or longer-standing mental health concerns.
When to see a clinical psychologist
People often see a clinical psychologist for complex anxiety or depression, trauma and PTSD, personality-related difficulties, or when they need a formal psychological assessment, such as an ADHD or autism assessment.
Medicare rebates
With a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, sessions with a clinical psychologist attract a higher Medicare rebate than general psychology sessions.
